Stress on water conservation

KARIMNAGAR: Speakers at a programme organised on the occasion of World Water Day on Tuesday here at JNM School stressed on the importance of water conservation.

The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, said that water had become a precious commodity and called upon people to conserve water as a social responsibility. The ZP Chairman, K.V. Rajeshwara Rao, said the Government was taking measures to solve water problem with the execution of irrigation projects.

2 of a family hurt in clash

NIZAMABAD: A young man, Narsing, received stab injuries and his sister, Susmita, was injured in a clash between two groups at Yerukala basti under One Town police station limits this on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the CI, S. Rajasekhar Rao, Narsing and his sister who run soda bottle business fell out with one Eqbal over a petty issue. Cases were booked against Eqbal and his friend under Section 307 and Narsing and Susmitha under Section 324.

Seminar on Telugu poetry WARANGAL: The Telugu Department of Kakatiya University is organising a two-day national seminar on `Modern Telugu poetry - Indian culture' from March 24 here.

Stalwarts in the field of Telugu literature - Pervaram Jagannadham, Acharya Kovela Suprasannacharya, Acharya Kovela Sampathkumaracharya, Bethavolu Ramabrahmam, Anumandla Bhumaiah, Shalaka Raghunatha Sharma, K Katyayini, Acharya Kasireddy Venkat Reddy, S L Narasimhacharya, S V Rama Rao, Nagilla Rama Sastry, V V Ramanadham and others would present their papers.

Consumer Rights Week ends

ADILABAD: The `World Consumer Rights Week' ended here on Tuesday with a valedictory workshop organised by the Adilabad district Civil Supplies Department. The district Collector, J. Sudha Rani, was the chief guest, while the Joint Collector, A. Dinakar Babu, presided. A number of suggestions emerged at the workshop, which will be forwarded to the Government.

Bank strike total

ADILABAD: Employees and officers of various banks struck work in Adilabad district on Tuesday causing dislocation of financial activity. According to K. Damodar Reddy, general secretary of Sri Saraswati Grameena Bank (SSGB), Adilabad, all the branches of different banks operating in the district remained closed in order to resist the merger of public sector banks and proposed hike in Foreign Direct Investment limit to 74 per cent.

Office-bearers elected

KARIMNAGAR: Ailu Ramesh has been elected president of the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) district unit. A. Ravinder is general secretary, Vasala Tirupathi, treasurer, A. Kishan Reddy, A. Narender and G. Maruthi Swamy will be vice-presidents.

New chief for Bar Association

CUDDAPAH: The Kodur Bar Association, at its meeting on Tuesday, unanimously elected A. Venkatarama Raju as its president and Chenchuramaiah as secretary. Others elected were Madhusudan Rao (treasurer) and Krishna and Vanamma (joint secretaries).

Plea to install statue

KURNOOL: The district secretary of the CPI(ML) New Democracy, P. Gokari, has urged the Government to install the statue of the first Andhra Chief Minister, Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu, in the city. Talking to reporters here on Monday, he said since Prakasam Panthulu occupied the seat of power at Kurnool, he deserved honour here.

Workshop on cancer care

KURNOOL: The Indian Medical Association local branch and Apollo Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad, conducted a workshop on the latest trends in cancer treatment here on Monday. An expert team highlighted the usefulness of positron emission tomography (PET) scan in detecting cancer at early stage.

SBI opens three ATMs

KURNOOL: State Bank of India (SBI) opened three ATMs and the regional business office here on Monday. The Deputy General Manager, Hyderabad module, M. Bhagavantha Rao, formally opened the installations at different functions. The ATMs were opened at Ucon Complex, Venkataramana Colony and Nandyal Road. The office was opened at the Ucon complex.

Schoolbags distributed

CUDDAPAH: The District Educational Officer, Y. Balaiah, on Tuesday distributed schoolbags among to students of a DPEP school at NTR Nagar, as part of the silver jubilee function of the LIC Employees' Union and International Women's Day celebrations. He exhorted students to strive for personality development, competitiveness in education as well as good conduct and healthy habits. The LIC Employees, Union women's wing convener, M. Vijayalakshmi, and leaders -- A. Raghunatha Reddy and B.V.S. Raju - spoke.

Liquor haul

ANANTAPUR: The Prohibition and Excise staff has seized IML while being smuggled into the district from Karnataka near Pedaballi village of N.P. Kunta mandal on Tuesday. It was being taken to a liquor shop at Mamillakunta village in a car. In all, 29 cases of Haywards whisky worth Rs. 60,000 was seized from the car. The vehicle was confiscated and its driver, Nazeer, arrested.

Medical camp

MADANAPALLE: The DPEP, Chittoor, with the cooperation of Velugu, will conduct a medical camp for physically challenged persons on March 24 at M.R.C.H. building, according to the Velugu school secretary, V. Padmaja. Details can be had from Velugu school on Bangalore road, Madanapalle.

TDP stalls House proceedings

Hyderabad: Members belonging to the Telugu Desam Party stalled the Assembly proceedings for half an hour on Tuesday pressing for a debate on the `mobilisation advance' given to the contractors selected for executing irrigation projects.

Soon after the House met in the morning, they were on their feet holding aloft placards demanding that the Chair admit their adjournment motion for a debate on the mobilisation advance. The Speaker, K. R. Suresh Reddy, disallowed not only theirs but five other adjournment motions given notice of by the CPI, CPI(M), BJP, Janata and MIM on different issues.

The TDP members relented after Mr. Reddy promised them to take up the subject on Wednesday.

More flights for Bangkok

CHENNAI: A tri-weekly direct Airbus-320 service on the Chennai-Bangkok-Chennai sector, introduction of thrice-a-week direct Airbus-320 service between Hyderabad and Singapore, bi-weekly between Hyderabad and Bangkok and between Bangalore and Bangkok are some of the highlights of the Indian Airlines summer schedule coming into force from March 27.

According to an IA press release, on the domestic sector, Alliance Air (subsidiary of IA), will restore the Chennai-Raipur and Visakhapatnam-Raipur links.

Farm labourer ends life

Sangareddy: Unable to repay the loan of Rs. 45,000 taken for his marriage, an agriculture labourer, Chakali Sailu (25) of Appajipalli in Alladurg mandal allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree near his house on Tuesday.

His parents also took loan from moneylenders for the marriage.

In another case, Hanumanthu (20), a resident of Patancheru allegedly committed suicide by dousing himself with kerosene and setting afire.

According to his parents, Hanumanthu was diagnosed HIV positive recently.

Trade bandh on March 30

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Trade has urged traders in the State to register their protest against the Government's move to introduce Value Added Tax (VAT) by participating in a bandh on March 30.

The federation president, A. Vijaykumar, and the general secretary, C. Nandkumar, at a press conference here on Tuesday said the 2,200-odd members belonging to 200 affiliated associations had unanimously decided to protest against the Government's decision to switch over to VAT system.

TDP, Congress stick to their guns

Hyderabad: The TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, said here on Tuesday that it would be detrimental to the interests of the State if Andhra Pradesh joined the Value Added Tax (VAT) regime while others refused to do so.

Talking to the media, Mr. Naidu said although the TDP had initiated the Bill and sent it to the President for assent during its rule, he was not in its favour as long as all other States refused to be signatories to it.

Countering Mr. Naidu's argument, the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konathala Ramakrishna, told reporters that the interests no section would be harmed.

Fort to get facelift

KARIMNAGAR: The district administration is taking the necessary steps for conservation of the historic Elgandal fort, which was first established by the Kakatiyas and later occupied by the Nizams, and developing it into a tourist spot.

The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, who visited the fort on Tuesday, said the Government had released Rs. 15 lakhs for carrying out repairs to the fort, setting up a restaurant, laying of roads and development of parks.

He also said that he would submit proposals to the Government for release of additional grant for development of the fort.

TDP activist killed

Srikakulam: Alapana Radhakrishna, TDP activist, was killed and 13 others were injured when a group attacked them with stones and sticks on Monday night at K.K. Naidupeta village in Etcherla mandal.

The injured were admitted to hospital. Radhakrishna, who sustained grievous injuries in the attack, later died in hospital. Old enmity between the groups was stated to be the reason for the attack.

Seized weapons displayed

KURNOOL: The police displayed the weapons and explosives seized after exchange of fire at Ramannapenta in Kurnool district on Sunday. The weapons included a tapancha, a hand grenade, five live cartridges, one spent cartridge, six detonators, camera flash, charger, nine kit bags, 50 meters of wire and revolutionary literature.

Meanwhile, the SP, B. Malla Reddy, denied the reports that the secretary of Nallama east division, Pratap alias Sagar was detained by the police.

Four Maoists held

GUNTUR: The Guntur District Police arrested four Maoists of Chandravanka dalam at a culvert near Anupu village in Macherla mandal on Tuesday evening while they were allegedly trying to plant landmines. The Circle Inspector of Police, G. Srinivasa Rao, along with other personnel took all the four into custody and recovered five landmines.

Naxal dump unearthed

ONGOLE: The police stumbled upon a dump of the CPI (Maoist) at Thummala Bayalu in Prakasam district on Tuesday.

The Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Chandra Laddha, said that they recovered seven grenades, grenade-filling machine, four wire bundles, two syntex tanks, fuse coils and three telephone instruments from the dump.

Paritala case: 2 for CBI custody

ANANTAPUR: Two suspects in Paritala Ravindra murder case -- P. Goverdhan Reddy and his associate B. Venkataswamy alias Ramaswamy -- were given to five-day custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Additional District Magistrate Court here on Tuesday.

The two were in the judicial remand at the sub-jail here after they were shifted here from Chanchalguda prison in Hyderabad where they were lodged in a murder case of Hyderabad.

Poisonous gas claims life

Kakinada: A farm worker, Tekumidi Lovaraju (20), who inhaled poisonous fumes while engaged in spraying of pesticide in the fields of Gurakadapalli village of Rayavaram mandal on Tuesday, subsequently died in hospital.

Former MLA dead

HYDERABAD: Pendurthi Sambasiva Rao (60), former Telugu Desam Party legislator from Burugupudi constituency in East Godavari district, in 1983 and 1985, died on Tuesday. The end came at his house in Burugupudi. Rao had been ailing for some time. He is survived by wife and two sons.

The TDP president, N.Chandrababu Naidu, expressed shock over Rao's death, called up the family members and consoled them. In a condolence message, Mr. Naidu praised Rao as an active leader who strove to solve the people's problems and worked for the spread of TDP in the district.
