BIJAPUR, MARCH 22. Despite the defeat of some of its key members, the panel led by the Bijapur MP, Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal, has won a majority of the seats on the 17-member governing body of Shri Siddeshwar Cooperative Bank Ltd. Besides Mr. Yatnal, 10 other panel members won the elections to the bank's board. While Mr. Yatnal secured 7,434, another sitting director, Shrishaila Gachchinmath, polled 5,630 votes. The incumbent president of the bank, G.M. Warad, won again and set a record of sorts. He has won the elections consecutively since 1962. Though the former MLC S.D. Karpoorimath did not contest the elections, he ensured that four of the five members of his panel won. The successful members of his panel are Rajendra Patil, Prakash Bagali, Vaijnath Karpoorimath and Saibanna Bhovi. Mr. Bhovi defeated the former MLA and a member of Mr. Yatnal's panel, Vilasbabu Almelkar. Mahadevi Patil, sister of the Basavanabagewadi MLA, Shivanand Patil, won the only seat reserved for a woman candidate. The Yatnal panel won one of the two seats reserved for charted accountants. The sitting director, S.M. Hundekar, was also able to retain his position on the board. The counting of ballot papers continued till 5 a.m. on Monday.
