`My experiences forced me to write about the plight of women'

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, MARCH 22. The appointment of Gita Nagabhushan as the Chairperson of the Kannada Sahitya Academy has undone the wrong done to the region all these years and recognised the contribution of the writer who has served the cause of Kannada literature.

Dr. Nagabhushan had been honoured with the Kendriya Sahitya Akademi Award this year and has many firsts in her career as a writer. She is the first woman to win the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award from Karnataka and also the first woman to be nominated as the Chairperson of the Kannada Sahitya Academy.

Hailing from a poor agricultural family from Savalagi village in the outskirts of Gulbarga city, Dr. Nagabhushan came up the hard way and has won several prestigious awards, including the Dana Chintamani Athimabbe Award in 2002, the Rajyotsava Award in 1998, the Kannada Sahitya Academy Award in 1995 and the Nadoja Award conferred by Kannada University in Hampi in 2003.

Her distinctive narrative style and simple language has won her a special place in the world of literature.

The Kendriya Sahitya Akademi conferred its annual award on her for her book "Baduku" also won her the Goruru Sahitya Award instituted by Goruru Pratishtana, the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Sahitya Award, the Rajyotsava Award and the Manikbhai Patel Award.

Dr. Nagabhushan studied in the government school in her native Savalgi village and later joined Sharanabasaveshwar Arts College and completed her postgraduate degree in Karnataka University.

To put in her own words, her success is mainly due to the surroundings in which she was brought up. "I was born in a poor family and my parents were illiterate. My experiences in the village of seeing the agony of exploited women forced me to write about the plight of the women in all my works."

Accomplished teacher

Dr. Nagabhushan is also an accomplished teacher. After working in different capacities in Nagareshwar School, she retired as the Principal of Nagareshwar Junior College.

Her first work, "Thaavaraya Hoovu" came out in 1968 and she has so far penned 31 works, including two research publications and two compilations of short stories.

She created ripples in the world of literature with her hard-hitting yet gripping social themes, which no other author dared to touch upon. Dr. Nagabhushan has also written the script for two serials for Doordarshan.
