BANGALORE, MARCH 22. Banks remained closed throughout the State as thousands of their officers and employees struck work protesting against the Centre's move to merge public sector banks to increase the foreign direct investment limit in banks to 74 per cent. The United Forum of Bank Unions had called the strike. A large number of protesting bank employees gathered at Mysore Bank Square here. Shantha Raju, forum convenor, said work had come to a standstill in nationalised banks and cooperative and private banks. He said this is only a beginning and if the Centre does not revise its policy, the agitation will escalate. In Mysore, bank officers and employees demonstrated in front of their respective banks. Employees of the State Bank of Mysore took out a procession through the main thoroughfares of Mysore and staged a dharna at K.R.S. Circle. The strike affected cooperative and grameen banks. More than 100 employees of the State Bank of India held a demonstration in front of the bank on the Sayyaji Rao Road. In Gulbarga, the employees protested outside the divisional office of the State Bank of Hyderabad. The strike was total in Mangalore and other parts of Dakshina Kannada district and the employees staged a protest rally at the State Bank of India Circle. Leo Rodrigues, convener of Mangalore unit of the forum, said the strike was a big success. However, as the ATMs were operational, the customers having ATM cards did not find any difficulty in withdrawing money. Even in remote places such as Madanthyar in Bantwal taluk, Sacchiripete in Mangalore taluk, Moodabidri, Deralakatte, Ullal, Belthangady, Puttur, Sulliya, Moolky and Suratkal, bank officers and employees struck work and protested. In Chitradurga, employees assembled in front of the State Bank of Mysore and protested against the anti-labour policies of the Centre. In Shimoga, customers were put to inconvenience on account of the strike. Those not aware of the call given for the strike returned disappointed. Employees of the Sahyadri Grameen Bank went on strike in response to the call. They were demanding the setting up of a centralised agency to oversee their operations. In Hassan, bank employees demonstrated at Narasimharaja Circle and took out a procession to the Hemavathi statue.
