KOZHIKODE MARCH 22. A seminar on building technology suited to Kerala is being organised here tomorrow by the Information and Public Relations Department. The programme, is to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Regional Science Centre and Planetarium.

Telecom officers to intensify stir

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MARCH 22. The United Forum of BSNL Executives has decided to intensify its eight-day-old work-to-rule and non-cooperation agitation demanding time-bound promotions and opposing the move to appoint management trainees at the top level, in the coming days. In a statement here, office-bearers of the Forum urged the management after a meeting in Thiruvananthapuram today to adopt a promotion policy similar to the ones in other public sector undertakings in the BSNL also. They claimed that their demand would not involve heavy financial commitment.

DMK membership drive

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam State committee has decided to launch a month-long membership drive in April as part of its plans to strengthen organisational activities in the State. The State president, Reneesh Perambra, told presspersons here today that the drive would be inaugurated in Palakkad. District committees will be formed in May. The party will give top priority to creating a new development culture by bringing together various parties on a common platform.

Traders firm on strike plan

THRISSUR MARCH 22. Leaders of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti have said that they will go ahead with the proposed shop-closure strike for three days on March 30 and 31 and April 1, against the move to implement Value Added Tax (VAT) in the State. Addressing a press conference here today, its leaders said retailers would stop taking stock from March 23. Wholesalers have stopped taking stocks from March 15. Import of eggs from other States will be stopped from March 23 and that of chicken from March 27.

Remand prisoner found dead

A remand prisoner in Viyyur sub-jail near here was found dead at government mental hospital in the city this morning. Chittilappilli Kannan (25) of Puranattukara was detained on March 6 from Peramangalam where he was found moving with some weapons at night under suspicious circumstances, according to the police. He was remanded to judicial custody when he was produced before court. But he was admitted to the mental hospital on March 11 when he showed signs of having mental illness. His body was found hanging in the hospital ward this morning.

Kalamandalam Platinum Jubilee

Year-long programmes will be held to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Kerala Kalamandalam, according to a press release from the Kalamandalam secretary, Balachandran Vadakkedathu. A meeting will be held at Cheruthuruthy, near here, on March 27 to discuss the jubilee celebrations, the release said.

Tenders invited for cargo

KOCHI MARCH 22. Cochin Port Trust has invited tenders to clear non-cleared or abandoned cargo at the port warehouse. A press release said here on Tuesday that inspection of the cargo could be done between March 28 and April 4. Tender documents can be purchased between March 21 and April 2 by paying Rs.273 by cash or by submitting a Demand Draft drawn in favour of the Financial Adviser and Chief Accounts Officer, Cochin Port Trust, payable at Kochi. Opening of the tenders is scheduled at 3.30 p.m. on April 6. Interested parties may contact the Port Trust office on telephone: 2666418.

Ritualistic performances

KOZHIKODE MARCH 22. A two-day workshop on `ritualistic performances and renaissance in Kerala' is being organised by the Folklore Fellows of Malabar Trust from April 2.

The programme will be held at Cheruthazhathu near Payyannur in Kannur district, said E.K. Govinda Varma Raja, programme convener, here today.

The participants will get an opportunity to see Theyyam performances in their natural settings. The registration fee is Rs.50 for students and Rs.100 for others.

Good Friday procession

KOLLAM March 22. The traditional way-of-the-cross ritual on Good Friday (March 25) organised by Saint Stephen's Church at Thope here will start from the church premises at 6 p.m. The parish priest, Paulson Kannappilly, said the procession would pass through Canal Road, Chinnakada, Beach Road and back to the church. The church expects more than 10,000 devotees to participate.

Paper leak: action sought

The State unit secretary of the Kerala NGO Sangh, A. Anil Kumar, has demanded strong action against those responsible for the SSLC question paper leak. Inaugurating the district council meeting of the sangh here today he said the leak had put lakhs of students and their parents into inconvenience.

Insurance staff to strike

The officers of the Oriental Insurance Company will go on strike on March 23 and 24 to press their demands. The nation-wide strike is being organised under the banner of the National Confederation of Insurance Company Officers Association. In a statement here, the Kochi region joint secretary of the association, K. Radhakrishnan Nair, said that wage revision was the prime demand.

Award for

N.R. Kannan

Thrissur March 22. N. R. Kannan, principal of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan Deemed University at Puranattukara here, has been selected for the Sarva Sastra Visharada Award, instituted by the Srirangam-based Sree Madhandavan Ashram. The award carries a purse of Rs. 10,000, statuette and citation.

Day of Excellence

KOTTAYAM March 22. Marian College, Kuttikkanam, will observe a Day of Excellence to mark the inauguration of the decennial year. M.M. Jacob, Governor, Meghalaya, will be the chief guest. According to the college authorities, the celebration will also mark the convocation of the first batch of postgraduate diploma in Business Administration.
