KOCHI, MARCH 22. The anti-filaria drug to be administered during the filariasis-eradication programme is safe and used for the disease the world over, according to statement filed by the Government in the High Court. The statement was filed in response to a writ petition filed by Jacob Vadakkancherry, Chairman, Janarogya Prasthanam, Kochi. The statement said that studies revealed that lymphatic filaria could be eliminated through the mass administration of a single dose of Diethylcarbamazine Citrate (DEC) a year for five to six years. In fact, a team appointed by the Central Government had investigated the deaths in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh following the administration of the drug. The team concluded that the deaths were either coincidental or unrelated to the use of DEC. The Health Department was using the DEC tablets supplied by the Central Government for the programmes. The quality of the drugs had been tested at the Government Analytical Laboratory.
Petition filed
A petition was filed seeking a review of the court's earlier judgment declining further investigation into the ice-cream parlour sex scandal case. The petition was filed by P.S. Shyla, secretary, All India Democratic Women's Association, Ernakulam district. The judgment was passed by a Division Bench comprising the then Chief Justice, Subashan Reddy, and Justice Cyriac Joseph while dismissing three public interest petitions for re-investigation into the case. The Bench held that the matter had been thoroughly investigated by the Supreme Court, which affixed its seal of approval to the manner and mode of investigation conducted so far. The Bench comprising the Acting Chief Justice, K.S. Radhakrishnan, and Justice K. Balakrishnan Nair admitted two writ petitions filed against the conduct of the Information Technology practical examination for 10th standard students in Government high schools.
Notice
Justice K. Balakrishnan Nair today issued notice to the High Court Registrar on a contempt petition filed against him for not implementing the High Court directive for giving return auto fares to the private secretaries to the judges and shorthand writers of the High court.
