Chamber regrets BJP-ruled States' decision on VAT

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 22. The Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday regretted the decision announced by the BJP-ruled States not to introduce VAT on the grounds that a legislation could not operate on a piecemeal basis in the country.

In a statement, MCCI president, Murali Venkatraman, said while it was a fact that VAT was not fully implemented across the country , it will not meet the aspirations of the trade and industry.

It will still be a step in the right direction as it has been established with the success of the implementation in Haryana that VAT was not only beneficial to trade but also generated revenue for the Government.

He expressed that the State Government would go ahead with the introduction of "this progressive measure" early in the financial year 2005-06 with appropriate Act and Rules. The various Chambers and industry organisations are committed to extend their full support to this measure.
