MANGALORE, MARCH 22. The Go Samrakshana Samithi here has opposed the shifting of protected cattle elsewhere without giving proper notice to the samithi, which had permission to use land at Urva Marigudi. In a press release here on Tuesday, the samithi president, Vasudeva Gowda, said at the time of shifting cattle at 3.30 a.m. on Monday there were 106 animals. They were taken away in nine trucks and some of the vehicles were mini-trucks. The land in the samithi's possession had been under a bond executed by the samithi with the district administration at the time of eviction. For the last nine months, the samithi was protecting the animals after rescuing them from cattle dealers. Mr. Gowda said the "raid" by the district administration aided by the officials of the Police Department and the Mangalore City Corporation was "brutal" disturbing peace in the area. Mr. Gowda alleged that the shifting of cattle had been initiated by political powers that could not withstand the fact that the provisions of the Anti-cow Slaughter Act were being implemented in the district by cutting supply of cows to abattoirs. In another development, the convenor of the samithi, Vinay L. Shetty, has lodged a complaint with the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Soumendhu Mukharjee, against the raid. In his complaint, he has stated that the samithi still had 131 animals lodged in the Go Samrakshana Kendra at Urva Marigudi area as per an interim court order.
