KOZHIKODE, MARCH 22. ``I don't want to go home... my mother used to beat me... all she needs is money... look at the burn marks on my face. It was her doing,'' says Surya explaining why she ran away from her home in a Salem village. The 10-year-old is among 30 girls from Tamil Nadu who are now in the Girls Juvenile Home at Vellimadukunnu (Silver Hills) in Kozhikode district. It houses 178 girls in the age group 5-18. "Many are brought here by either the police or Childline," says P.V. Lilly, Juvenile Home superintendent. On Monday, the Additional Superintendent of Police, Salem, M. Ramasamy, visited the home and talked to the children from Tamil Nadu. Ms. Lilly says six children were brought here as directed by the Senior Magistrate, Children's Court, Thrissur, last month after they had been taken into custody by the Kodungallur police. All of them were working as domestic help at various places. Manimegha (12) from a village on the outskirts of Chennai was brought to Kerala by an agent for household job at Kasaragod. ``She said I would get enough money. But I had to run away from that house. They used to torture me,'' says Manimegha, who will be shifted to an institution in Tamil Nadu shortly. Revathi tells a similar story of harassment, at a home in Kasaragod district. "My father was willing to send me to work in Kerala. But I ran away from that home because they (employers) used to beat me severely. Now I want to go home at Vadaponnparappu,'' says Revathi, whose mother died long ago. Ms. Lilly says poverty at home brings the children to Kerala. While some long to be with their parents, a majority are not keen on going home. Surya refused to go when her mother arrived here a few months ago.
