CHENNAI, MARCH 22 . The State Government today announced steps to enhance security in all seven central prisons and two special prisons and to construct a sub-jail for women at Cuddalore. Replying to discussions on the demand for grants to the Prisons Department, the Public Works Minister, O. Paneerselvam, said the central prisons in Chennai, Vellore, Cuddalore, Tiruchi, Madurai, Palayamkottai and Salem and special prisons for women in Vellore and Tiruchi would be provided with doorframe metal detectors at a cost of Rs.3.60 lakhs. Fifteen more cellphone deactivators would be provided in the Coimbatore central prison and five new instruments in the Cuddalore central prison at a cost of Rs.17.20 lakhs. Hand-held metal detectors would be provided in all central prisons, the Borstal school at Pudukottai and the two special prisons for women at a cost of Rs. 0.78 lakhs. Cameras would be provided in the central prisons, a multi-media projector to the office of the Additional Director-General of Prisons, finger print reader and digital cameras to all prisons and an X-ray scanner to the central prison in Coimbatore to avert physical frisking, at a cost of Rs.19.12 lakhs. The Government would earmark Rs.2.09 crores for the construction of a sub-jail for women in the Cuddalore sub-jail complex, Mr.Paneerselvam said. The construction of a modern prison complex at Puzhal, at a cost of Rs.77.09 crores, was progressing. V. Sivapunniyam (CPI) and K.C. Karunakaran (CPI-M) demanded the release of those who had undergone jail term for over 10 years. Mr. Sivapunniyam urged the Government to fill 800 vacancies for jail warders.
