By K.N. Murali Sankar
VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 22. More and more people are interested in buying vegetables at rythu bazaars only for their quality and cheap price when compared with outside vendors. This is one reason why over 85 per cent of the customers who visit rythu bazaars prefer to go there again regardless of the distance from their residence, says a survey conducted by the students of Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala. The other interesting finding of the survey is that 42 per cent of farmers complained about the continuance of middlemen system while only 14 per cent of the customers feel that middlemen were having a say in the affairs of rythu bazaars. The survey was conducted on the functioning of three rythu bazaars - located at PWD Grounds, Kedareswarapeta and Patamata - by the students of the Economics Department under the leadership of the Department Head, J. Vasantha Kumari. Five students of the college who conducted the survey are: G. Radhika, G. Durga, B. Rajani, P. Priyadarsini and G. Vidita. According to the survey, 74 per cent of the customers are getting their choice of vegetables at the rythu bazaars and 20 per cent are still depending on roadside vendors for a few varieties. Most customers expressed happiness over the chance to pick up quality vegetables at rythu Bazaars. Over 50 per cent of the customers were happy about this while 87 per cent of the customers were in favour of sale of fruits, edible oils, pulses and eggs also in these bazaars. Fifty six per cent of the customers felt that the prices of vegetables were much cheaper in rythu bazaars while 34 per cent felt that they were marginally lesser.
