Vijayawada
By Our Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 22. The city council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has asked the Government to order a CB-CID probe into the alleged irregularities in the allotment of houses constructed for the poor under the Valmiki-Ambedkar Awas Yojana (Vambay). CPI Corporators staged a one-day hunger strike in front of the Sub-Collector's office on Tuesday to protest against the irregularities in Vambay scheme. In a letter to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, they said that of the 8,800 houses sanctioned to Vijayawada, 2,292 were constructed in New Rajarajeswaripet, while 4,895 were constructed near Disney Land at Singhnagar. The scheme was ridden with corruption, as officials and political leaders allegedly colluded to take possession of the houses under benami names, they said.
