Activities remained paralysed in nationalised and cooperative banks in the district today, as employees and officers of nine major unions went on a day's strike in response to a call for a nationwide agitation. More than 2000 members from the All India Bank Employees Association, All India Bank Officers Confederation, All India Bank Officers Association, Bank Employees Federation of India and other organisations staged a demonstration, condemning the merger moves and opposing the foreign banks or financial institutions taking over Indian banks. M. Muniasamy, president of IBOC, M. Sundararajan of AIBEA, P. R. Rajagoal of AIBOA and L. Ramasamy of BEFI participated.
