Bank staff strike

COIMBATORE, MARCH 22. A large number of bank employees and officers staged a demonstration here today as per the call given by the United Forum of Bank Unions in front of the main branch of the Bank of Baroda.

A release from the forum said that in Coimbatore District more than 4,000 bank employees and officers observed a day's strike. They were protesting the 74 per cent foreign direct investment in private sector banks, disinvestment in public sector banks and demanded immediate recovery of bad loans, the release said.

Business transactions to the tune of Rs. 100 crores were affected today in Tirupur. Hundreds of employees and officers under the aegis of United Forum of Bank Unions, Tirupur staged a demonstration in front of the Indian Overseas Bank. The Convenor of the Forum, Shah Jahan, and leaders of various associations, S. Rathnavelu, (AIBEA), P. Chandran, (AIBOC), Krishnamurthy, (NCBE), and Jayababu, (AIBOA), spoke.
