Further action against Murali likely

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MARCH 22. Further disciplinary action against the former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K. Muraleedharan appeared a possibility today with the All India Congress Committee in-charge of the State, Ahmed Patel, stating that "disciplinary action will take place in a couple of days.''

However, Mr. Patel did not name Mr. Muraleedharan while stating this. Responding to an observation that Mr. Muraleedharan had showered praise on the Congress president, he said: "How does it matter if he praised the high command; he spoke out against the Kerala Government.''

The AICC for some days now has been exploring the possibility of expelling Mr. Muraleedharan but had decided to reserve its decision till after the last of the three rallies called by the Karunakaran faction despite instructions to the contrary from the party's central leadership. This past Sunday, a senior leader in the thick of the efforts to deal with the stalemate in Kerala had said that Mr. Muraleedharan's expulsion was a possibility but much would depend on the tone and tenor of his speech at the Kochi rally.

With Mr. Muraleedharan showing no signs of relenting at Monday's rally, the party high command is veering around to the view that indiscipline cannot be tolerated indefinitely. "Tolerating indiscipline has not taken us anywhere. We turned a blind eye to indiscipline by the Karunakaran faction and brokered a settlement to maintain unity ahead of the Lok Sabha elections but failed to win a single seat. There will be some action,'' Mr. Patel said.

Time-frame

Another possibility is putting a time-frame to Mr. Muraleedharan's suspension. While suspending him ahead of the first rally in Kozhikode on March 9, the Congress had not fixed any time in the hope that he would relent. In fact at that time, the AICC had hinted that the suspension could be revoked if the rallies were called off.

Meanwhile, the central leadership is awaiting reports from Kerala on yesterday's rally and responses to the show-cause notices issued to the 13 legislators who attended it. The AICC's calculation is that many of the 13 MLAs will not take hardline positions once it becomes evident that the high command's tolerance for indiscipline should not be tested further. The former Fisheries Minister of Kerala, K. V. Thomas, said as much today while briefing the media after meeting the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi.
