Avoid roadside eateries, say doctors

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 22. Jaundice, known commonly as `yellow fever', has raised its head in parts of the city. And the best way to keep the disease away, doctors say, is to stay away from roadside `bandis' selling sliced watermelons, cucumbers and other munchies.

An outbreak of the proportion that is reported in the city is usually caused by poor sanitation and contamination of food and water, according to consultant gastroenterologist at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, Manu Tandan.

"It is safe to avoid food served on roadsides because water used there could be contaminated," he says. "Ensure protected water supply and use boiled water," advises Dr. Tandan, adding that special care has to be taken by authorities to prevent sewage from contaminating water. Treatment by a specialist is recommended, while a regular blood test is best to confirm the disease.
