THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 22. The Medical College police have arrested a 30-year-old Maldivian national and his 18-year-old wife on charges of murdering their eight-day-old infant girl. The Circle Inspector, R. Jayasankar, identified the accused as Asim Ibrahim and his second wife, Muhamina Hussien. The couple had reported the death of the child to the local police on January 19 on the basis of which the police registered a case of unnatural death under Section 174 of the CrPC. The couple initially told the police that the infant had overturned in her sleep and died from suffocation. However, the post-mortem examination showed that the infant had been smothered to death. The police also found that couple had approached a private hospital recently to get the child aborted. The CI said the couple had legalised their marriage recently. He said the couple confessed to the crime when confronted with the evidence gathered by the police. The scarf allegedly used to smother the kid was recovered from their lodge room. The accused will be produced before the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate on Wednesday on the charge of murder under Sections 320 and 315 of the Indian Penal Code.
