Gang-rape: four get rigorous imprisonment

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 22. The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Fast Track Court I, Y. Thajudeen Koya, has sentenced four persons to seven years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 15,000 each after being found guilty of gang-raping a 36-year-old woman at the slaughter-house in Kunnukuzhi here on May 21, 1996.

The convicted persons are Chandranand alias Hari of Kannammoola, Kankan of Anayara, and Lalu and Rajan, residents of Kunnukuzhi. In case of default of payment of the fine amount, they will have to further undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years.

In his judgment, the judge observed that the nature of the crime was such that the offenders did not deserve leniency. The court also directed that Rs. 50,000 be paid to the victim as compensation.
