Protest by electricity consumers

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 22. Electricity consumers from West Bengal, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi today staged a protest under the aegis of the All Bengal Electricity Consumers' (ABECA) Association on Parliament Street here to demand power at affordable prices for the poor and small-scale traders. The protestors demanded that the Electricity Act, 2003, be scrapped and power be given to the poor at Re. 1 per unit. They also demanded free power for agriculture, urging the Central and State governments to take up responsibility for rural and slum electrification.

Speakers said the actual motive of the Act was to make power a commodity and give a free hand to investors to make more profit. They also expressed concern that the new Act would only help multinationals, while the burden of their profit would be borne by the poor. Earlier, the protestors gathered at Ram Lila Maidan and reached Parliament Street where the police stopped them.
