Elders pay tributes to Bhagat Singh
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
MARCH 23.
The Rajya Sabha today paid tributes to revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Raj Guru and Sukhdev on the 74th anniversary of their martyrdom for the country's freedom. The members observed silence as a mark of respect to them.
Recalling their sacrifices, the Rajya Sabha Chairman, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, said the nation pledged itself to uphold the cherished values for which they had laid down their lives. "Their sacrifices has made all of us proud. The nation cannot forget them."
The Government agreed with an Opposition suggestion of having portraits of the three in Parliament House and their busts on the premises.
To S.S. Ahluwalia's suggestion, the Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Suresh Pachauri, said it was "our moral duty'' not to remember as a "formality" the martyrdom of these revolutionaries. A committee, chaired by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, would take a decision on this. "The Government favours it and will take all steps in this direction."
The Upper House also paid homage to M. Palaniyandi, a former member of the House from Tamil Nadu, who died on March 8 at the age of 87.
