Rajasthan budget today

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, MARCH 23. The Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, will present the State's annual Budget for 2005-06 in the Assembly on Thursday when it meets for a day after the recess. Ms. Raje, who holds the portfolio of Finance, is presenting a regular Budget this time unlike the previous year when she had gone in for an interim Budget in the month of February.

Ms. Raje will also seek a vote on account in the House for the next four months before the House adjourns for the Holi break till March 28.

Ms. Raje, who sat closeted for the day with the senior officials, the Principal Secretary (Finance), Rajiv Maharshi, and Secretaries, Khemaram Choudhary, Govind Sharma and B.N.Sharma, gave final shape to the Budget proposals by the evening.

Going by the collective decision of the Bharatiya Janata Party ruled States not to introduce VAT from April 1 this year, the Budget would be a tightrope walk for Ms.Raje adjusting the revenue and the tax. Experts feel that she would be faced with lot of imponderables in this regard and VAT is new for its practitioners as well as non practitioners, both.
