Probe panel visit in April

ADILABAD: The one-man inquiry commission looking into farmers' suicides between July 1, 1998, and August 23, 2004, will be on a two-day visit to Adilabad district on April 1 and 2. The commission will conduct meetings with the concerned Mandal Revenue Officers to gather relevant information. The meetings will be held at the Collectorate's conference hall, according to an official press note here on Wednesday.

Insurance staff hold dharna

KARIMNAGAR: Employees of the National, New India, Oriental, and United India Insurance companies staged a dharna in front of the Oriental Insurance office here on Wednesday, demanding a solution to their problems, including wage revision, etc. The Hyderabad region general insurance employees association joint secretary, G Rajesham, the JAC leaders, A Haribabu, A Srinivas, the CITU leader, Sarangapani, and others participated in the dharna. They opposed the privatisation of the insurance sector and demanded the Government to implement wage revision and promotions to the insurance sector employees.

SSC candidates booked

ADILABAD: Nine SSC candidates were booked for malpractice across Adilabad district on Wednesday. Similarly, three invigilators, one each at Bellampalli, Khanapur and Tadihatnoor were withdrawn due to negligence in performing duties. The District Educational Officer, P. B. Narsinga Rao, visited four exam centres, two each at Sarangapur and Neredigonda, while the flying squads visited 54 centres in the district. Meanwhile, the DEO said Arkey Naresh, a class X student of the Government High School No. 2 was denied hall ticket because he had deficient attendance. There were five other candidates from the same school who too were denied hall ticket on the same grounds, he said.

MSR's tour in district

KARIMNAGAR: The Minister for Endowments, M Satyanarayana Rao, will visit Karimnagar district to participate in various programmes from March 24 to 27 in Karimnagar town and other places. According to an official release here today, the Minister will arrive here on March 24 evening and proceed to Jagtial to participate in programmes arranged in the Jagtial Municipality alongwith the local legislator, T Jeevan Reddy. He will also inaugurate the central lighting system at Mankammathota locality in Karimnagar town in the evening.

On March 26, he will meet officials on the developmental works of the district and attend locally arranged programmes. On March 27, he will participate in the swearing-in ceremony of the Sri Gidde Perumal Swamy temple trust board members in the town and then proceed to Hyderabad.

Plea to repair scan equipment

KARIMNAGAR: The Lok Satta district unit has asked the Government to ensure the repair of the CT scan equipment at the Government headquarters hospital in Karimnagar and provide proper medicare to the poorer sections. In a press note here today, the Lok Satta district president, N Srinivas, and the general secretary, T Rajamouli, said that the expensive CT scan machine was lying idle in the hospital since the last five months denying the facilities to the patients. They said that the patients were forced to spend huge amounts in private hospitals for the CT scan tests.

SVIMS's distinction

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) stood fourth in the national-level physiotherapy quiz competitions conducted by Father Mueller charitable institute at Mangalore (Karnataka) recently. Raghuveer and V.R. Kesavaram, students of the SVIMS Physiotherapy College, ensured that the college stood fourth among the 45 that took part.

Sarpanches' meet

NELLORE: A district level meeting of sarpanches would be held here on March 25 at the Bhavani Residency. The meeting among other issues, would discuss about the drinking water scarcity in summer, release of rice under Swarna Jayanti Rozgar Yojana and topics relating to release of grants and amounts pertaining to profession tax.

TDP activists stage dharna

NELLORE: Functionaries of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) staged a dharna in front of the Municipal Corporation office, on Wednesday, demanding adequate supply of drinking water to residents of the town during summer. They demanded an enquiry into irregularities in the Corporation. Earlier, a procession was taken out from the TDP office to the Corporation office.

Health camp

NELLORE: A free health camp for handloom workers will be held at the primary health centre, Anumasamudrampet, on Thursday. The camp, which will function from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. is to be organised under the auspices of various agencies belonging to Central and State Governments. While spectacles will be given to eye patients, pregnant women will be given free medicines and Rs. 500 for nutritious food. In addition, medicines worth Rs. 8,000 for T.B. and asthma patients have been purchased. All patients attending the camp will also be provided free food.

Electric wire stolen

Nellore: Transco officials lodged a complaint with the police that electric wire worth Rs. 30,000 was stolen in Pedapariya village of Ogili mandal. In Pellakur mandal, the police received a complaint that an electric starter was stolen from a field in Sirasanambedu village.

Huts gutted

Cuddapah: Six huts were gutted in the Somasila project submersible village of Kalavandalapalle in Atlur mandal on Wednesday. The fire is thought to have been caused by a shortcircuit.

Sparks from overhead electric wires reportedly fell in the thatched roof of a house and the flames spread engulfing six huts, according to information.

`Maoist organiser safe'

HYDERABAD: A CPI (Maoist) organiser, Bandi Prakash, and his wife, Hema, are believed to have crossed over into Chhattisgarh from Khammam district. This development has belied the apprehension of the CPI (Maoist) emissary, Varavara Rao, and others who claimed that Prakash was taken into custody and demanded that he should be immediately produced in a court of law.

Mr. Varavara Rao said on Wednesday that Prakash had escaped the police dragnet and entered Chhattisgarh with the help of people in a village close to the border. He told The Hindu that this was revealed to him by Ravinder Reddy, a relative of Prakash, who returned here from Chattisgarh.

Lay siege to MRO office

CUDDAPAH: Villagers of Vontimitta and Chenchugaripalle laid siege to the Vontimitta MRO office on Wednesday demanding mitigation of acute drinking water scarcity.

Alleging laxity on part of elected representatives and officials in doing anything to solve the problem, people protested leading to postponement of the mandal parishad meeting by an hour. The Vontimitta MRO, Sudhakar, assured them of steps to mitigate the scarcity. Earlier, CPI activists also protested in front of the MRO office on the issue.

Obscene film material burnt

ANANTAPUR: Activists of the All-India Students' Federation (AISF) and the All-India Youth Federation (AIYF) attacked three cinema halls here on Wednesday and burnt posters, film rolls and CDs of obscene films being screened by them.

The programme was taken up to commemorate the death anniversary of the freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh. The activists led by B. Ramanaiah (AISF) and Ajaykumar (AIYF) also garlanded a portrait of Bhagat Singh at Ferror Colony and vowed to rededicate themselves to the ideology of Bhagat Singh.

Varsity teachers defer protest

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Federation of University Teachers' Association on Wednesday deferred its mass casual leave and dharna programme slated for March 24 in view of the Government's assurance on Tuesday. B. Satyanarayana, secretary-general, in a statement said that the Minister for Higher Education, P.Venkateswara Rao, at a meeting with office-bearers of the federation, had assured them of working out within a month modalities for resolving the issue of merger of DA equivalent to 50 per cent of the basic with pay.

Three hurt in clash for water

NELLORE: Three persons received injuries in Modegunta village of Kovur mandal following a row over distribution of drinking water near a tap. When the issue was taking an ugly turn, the police intervened and controlled the situation.

Villagers stall land survey

ADILABAD: Villagers of Waddadi in Tamsi mandal on Tuesday did not allow work on the survey of the Mattadivagu dam demanding declaration of the rate of compensation for the land to be acquired by the Government. However, they relented after a team of irrigation officials intervened.

A survey team belonging to a contractor of the medium irrigation project across the Waddadi river was conducting survey of lands for acquisition for the project's spillway, submergence area and canals near the village.

ZP official dies in mishap

KURNOOL: The Deputy CEO of Zilla Parishad, Kumara Swamy (57) was among the five persons killed in a road mishap near Vengannabavi on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday.

According to reports, the Deputy CEO and his staff were returning after an inspection at Veldurthy when their jeep collided with a mini-van. Others who died were -- Prasad Sarma (35), senior assistant, Gopakrishna (32), junior assistant, Prakash Reddy (48), driver and Maddamma, leader of self-help group, at Kalugotla in Veldurthy mandal.

Three killed in accident

In Adilabad district, three persons were killed in a road accident in Utnoor mandal on Wednesday when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling rammed into a stationary lorry from behind. The persons who were killed on the spot were -- Vatsala Waghmare (35), resident of Indervelli, Bahadur (40), resident of Wadoor in Neredigonda mandal and Sharman Naik (55), resident of Shantapur in Gudihatnoor mandal. Sopan, Uttam and Balu, the auto driver were seriously injured and shifted to Hyderabad.

Man poisons children

GUNTUR: A 40-year-old farmer of Vatticherukuru village in Guntur district poisoned three of his children and attempted suicide on Wednesday by consuming rat poison mixed with soft drink resulting in the death of two children.

Meda Shankara Rao, owning three acres of land in the village, refused to settle in his father-in-law's village and his wife, along with the youngest child, Srikanth, left for her parents' house. The police said that peeved by his wife, Amrutha's refusal to return to Vatticherukuru, Shankara Rao gave rat poison to his children who were with him.

While Karthik (5) and Sirisha (6) died on the spot,Venkata Nagajyothi (7) and Shankara Rao, were undergoing treatment in the Guntur Government General Hospital and were out of danger.

SSC student hurt in mishap

ADILABAD: Kishore Kumar (15), a class X student and resident of Ghadial ghar locality, was seriously injured when the Adilabad-Kinwat rail-bus hit him at the market level crossing on Wednesday. Kishore Kumar was hurrying for his exam centre at the Government Girls High School at about 11.30 a.m. when he found the gate closed the manned level crossing as the rail-bus going towards Kinwat was running on the line. He did not stop and tried to get across along with his cycle when the rail-bus hit him. He was first admitted to the Government Headquarters Hospital from where he was shifted to Nagpur in Maharashtra due to severe head injuries.

Farm worker electrocuted

Kakinada: A farm worker, Saladi Rambabu (32), was electrocuted when he accidentally stepped on a snapped live wire while going to a nearby borewell in the midst of paddy field on the outskirts of Venkatapuram-Kotapdu villages of Rangampet Mandal on Wednesday. He died instantaneously.

Record in iron ore handling

Kakinada: A record was set in loading of iron ore fines cargo in to the vessel `M.V. Darya Bhakti' at the deepwater port here by handling 41,382 MT's within 28 hours 30 minutes. According to V. Raghavulu, representative of the Ms Bothra Company, the shipping agents, the loading of iron ore commenced at 1.10 a.m. on March 21 and within 24 hours, 40,100 tonnes of cargo was loaded and entire loading of 41,382 tonnes was completed by 5.30 a.m. on Wednesday. He claimed it as the all-India record in manual handling of cargo.
