Case against Joshi condemnable, says Dattatreya

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 23. The Bharatiya Janata Party today criticised the State Government for initiating criminal defamation proceedings against its leader, Murli Manohar Joshi, for his reported observations flaying the police and the Government for arresting the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, in connection with the Sankararaman case.

Describing the Government's move as "highly condemnable," Bandaru Dattatreya, national secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu, told presspersons today that "we are not afraid of such cases. We know how to tackle this kind of vindictive action."

On the Sankaracharya arrest issue, Mr. Dattatreya denied that the party had failed to take on the Tamil Nadu Government vigorously. "We have not approached the issue politically. For us, it is one of several issues and not the only issue."

"Chintan baithak"

The party would hold a "chintan baithak" (brain-storming session) next month to decide its strategy for the forthcoming Assembly election in the State.

The session would be held on April 15 and 16 in which the former party president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, and the general secretaries, Pramod Mahajan, Arun Jaitley and Sanjay Joshi, would participate. The party would hold consultation with leading personalities of the State. The venue of the meet would be on the outskirts of Chennai, he added.
