Homeopath held for `torturing' wife

By Our Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM, MARCH 23. The Kancheepuram All-Women Police have arrested a homeopath for allegedly torturing his second wife at Wallajahbad, 15 km from Kancheepuram.

According to police sources, Sundarrajan (50) had kept Shanthi in a locked cell at his clinic-cum-residence on Raja Street for the past two months. The police acted on a complaint from Navaneetham, doctor's first wife. Shanthi's health had deteriorated, as she was not given enough food and water.

The police said Sundarrajan, who married Navaneetham in 1975, sent her out of his house and married Shanthi, a nurse from Avalur, close to Wallajahbad. It is reported that he also married a nursing student, Vasanthi, later. The police said he locked Shanthi in when she questioned her husband's activities. Last week, Navaneetham visited the clinic and noticed Shanthi in the cell. Sundarrajan was arrested on Tuesday.

Sundarrajan has been booked under Ssections 498A (Torture) and 365 (Illegal detention) of the Indian Penal Code.
