11 NIT directors sacked, two quit

NEW DELHI, MARCH 23. The services of the Directors of 11 National Institutes of Technology were terminated and two others resigned because the Government failed to follow norms in their appointment two years ago, the Human Resource Development Ministry announced tonight.

Seen as the latest in a "detoxication" or "desaffronisation" drive since the United Progressive Government took office around mid-2004, the multiple terminations were stated to have been approved by an Appointment Committee of the Cabinet. The terminations resulted from failure to obtain the Cabinet Committee's ``prior approval'' in making the appointments in February-December 2003.

"These appointments were ab initio void," a statement by the HRD Ministry said.

The NITs affected were Allahabad, Bhopal, Calicut, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Jamshedpur, Kurukshetra, Rourkela, Srinagar, Surathkal and Warangal, the statement said adding that the Directors of NITs at Hamirpur and Nagpur also similarly appointed had ``submitted their resignations which were accepted.''

The NITs were carved out of 17 Regional Engineering Colleges across India and the Bihar College of Engineering, Patna and are now the fully funded institutions under the Central Government with Deemed to be University status.

The move was intended to make the institutions centres of excellence.

The HRD Ministry has been directed by the ACC to complete full and proper process of selecting new Directors of Institutes within the next four months.— UNI
