MADURAI, MARCH 23. The Cable Operators' Guild has urged the Tamil Nadu Government to stop collecting entertainment tax from sub-cable operators as per the recent ruling of the Supreme Court. The executive committee of the guild, which met here on Saturday, said that a Supreme Court Bench March 16 ruled that the entertainment tax should be levied only on the multi-system operator, distributing TV signals and not sub-cable operators. Hence, the State Government, which had imposed the entertainment tax on sub-cable operators who were providing cable links (with the TV signals got from the MSO) to the households, should instead levy the tax on the MSO, the guild said. While the cable operators in Corporation limits were paying Rs. 6000 every month, those in municipal areas were paying Rs. 3,000 and others Rs. 1000, A. Pandi, president of the guild, said. Besides, the guild sought the introduction of a `set-top box' (conditional access system), which is now in practice in Chennai, throughout the State. While the people in Chennai were able to pay only for the channels, which they were watching, elsewhere, the cable subscribers were forced to pay a higher subscription, including for those pay-channels, which they never watched, Mr. Pandi said. The Central and the State Governments should implement the subscriber-friendly CAS throughout the State in order to "regulate cable subscription and collection and to protect the cable industry," the guild said.
