This Day That Age
The Lok Sabha on March 24 focussed attention on the continuing large-scale influx of displaced persons from East Pakistan to West Bengal which, several speakers felt, might create very serious repercussions in the country if it were not promptly checked. During discussion on the demands for grants in respect of the Relief and Rehabilitation Ministry, Mrs. Renu Chakravarty (Communist), Mr. N.C. Chatterjee (Hindu Mahasabha), Mrs. Sucheta Kripalani (PSP) and several Congress members said a solution to the problem brooked no delay. Mrs. Renu Chakravarty, speaking on her cut motions, said the House had not been told by the Government the reasons for the present exodus from East Pakistan. India had her Deputy High Commissioner in Dacca. Was it due to the deterioration in the economic situation in East Pakistan or due to the "great amount of insecurity that has come about as a result of the overthrow of the elected Ministry there?" The problem of rehabilitation of refugees from East Pakistan could not be tackled by one State. It had to be tackled on an all-India level. Replying to supplementaries, Prime Minister Nehru said the Government were discussing the question of fresh influx of Hindus from East Bengal with the Pakistan Government, "pressing upon them all the points and getting replies from them which will lead to the bettering of the situation." He added that the matter was of the "utmost importance and seriousness affecting our country and we are all very much concerned."
