dated March 25, 1955: Ike on Yalta papers

The U.S. President, Mr. Eisenhower, commenting at a press conference in Washington on March 23 on the publication of the Yalta papers, said there was nothing to be gained by going back ten years to try to show whether someone might have been wrong. He said he personally never questioned any man's motives. That comment was in reply to a question whether he believed the participants in the 1945 Yalta Conference were sincere. Asked whether he believed publication of the Yalta documents by the State Department last week might cramp the style of the leaders of nations at any Big Power conference, he replied that he hoped that would not occur. He said he earnestly believed that documents dealing with such conferences should be published, but the U.S. should be careful whenever the good faith of any ally was involved.
