PONDICHERRY, MARCH 24. Shops and establishments including hotels, cinema houses and industrial units will remain closed in Pondicherry tomorrow following a bandh call by the Pondicherry Chamber of Commerce to protest against the proposed implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) in the Union Territory from April 1. A joint meeting of the shops and representatives of different wings of business community and also industrialists feared that implementation of VAT would spell doom to the business and also hit the economy of the Union Territory particularly when the Central Sales Tax continued to remain in force. The General Secretary of the Chamber, A. Balasubramanian, told newsmen that the bandh would be observed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow.
