Vegetable marketing complex in Hosur on the cards

By S. Prasad

HOSUR, MARCH 24. The Krishnagiri district administration is exploring the possibility of setting up a wholesale marketing complex for vegetables and other agricultural produce in and around Hosur.

With 82 per cent of the total vegetable produce in the district coming from the Hosur and Denkanikottai regions, the long-felt demand of the farmers for a marketing complex will not only improve the rural economy, but also enhance the standard of living of the people here.

According to the Collector, Mangat Ram Sharma, the small market in Hosur is very congested. We want to bring in better facilities and infrastructure for the local farmers to increase their output and get better prices for their produce.

Vegetable buyers in and around Hosur have evinced keen interest in the proposed market, which will be a joint venture between vegetable merchants and growers.

The project was proposed to be situated between Hosur and Shoolagiri on the Hosur-Krishnagiri National Highway. The complex would consist of 150 shops and other facilities such as godowns and transhipment bays. It could handle movement of up to 3,000 tonnes of vegetables a day.

The complex would be built on 66,000 sq.mts of land at Rs. 3 crores for which the land had already been identified, the Collector said.

The complex would also include weighbridge, rest rooms, restaurants, toilets and water supply from overhead tanks to help organise the trade.

Mr. Sharma said that the annual vegetable production in the Hosur and Denkanikottai regions alone was estimated to be 1,20,284 tonnes.

Farmers were of the opinion that with the major produce of vegetables being sold to consumers in Bangalore and other cities, Hosur was an appropriate centre for construction of a vegetable market complex similar to the one in Bangalore. It would help provide employment opportunities to women, both directly and indirectly.

Following the success of the Tamil Nadu Precision Farming Project which was launched at Thorapalli in Hosur taluk, more farmers were now interested in taking up precision farming creating the much needed demand for horticultural crops especially vegetables.

In addition, the application of effective water management practices such as drip and sprinkler irrigation would definitely boost the overall yield of vegetable production in the district.

While the proposed marketing complex had been initially planned for vegetables, plans were afoot to expand it to fruits also, the Collector said.
