Motion to remove Orissa Speaker rejected

By Our Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR, MARCH 24. An Opposition notice to move a resolution for removal of the Orissa Assembly Speaker, Maheswar Mohanty, was rejected in the Assembly this afternoon.

The Opposition parties, led by the Congress, had decided to move a resolution in protest against the Speaker's alleged ``filthy and unparliamentary'' comments against some of the Opposition legislators.

The Deputy Speaker, Prahallad Dora, rejected the notice on technical grounds, in the absence of the entire Opposition.

The Opposition and the Speaker have been at loggerheads following an argument between Mr. Mohanty and the Congress MLA, Taraprasad Bahinipati, during zero hour on Wednesday.

Reacting to the Opposition decision to move a resolution earlier, the Speaker said it was their democratic right to move a resolution and he had no comments to make. He, however, made it clear that there was no question of making any compromise with the Opposition.

Admitting that he had made some comments against the Opposition, Mr. Mohanty said he had been provoked to do so.
