NEW DELHI, MARCH 24. The Centre today extended by another three months the term of the Justice Liberhan Commission probing the sequence of events leading to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992. The Commission, whose term was to expire by March 31, has been asked to submit its report on or before June 30. Set up on December 16, 1992, the Commission held its final sitting last month after the completion of the oral evidence by witnesses. Though effective sittings started from January 1993, there was a disruption for about two years because of certain interim orders passed by the Delhi High Court. The regular hearings started from 1995. The Commission held its initial sittings in Lucknow and shifted to Delhi later. Most of the parties have already filed their written submissions and the final arguments have been completed. The Commission concluded the recording of evidence on January 22, 2003. It could not proceed further since it felt that the examination of the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Kalyan Singh, was desirable before proceeding further. Mr. Singh, who was reluctant to adduce evidence, finally gave his version of the events. With this all evidence was closed. In the last 12 years of hearing, the Commission has held 330 sittings and examined 100 witnesses 14 defence witnesses; 53 Central Government witnesses and 33 Commission witnesses, including the former Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, the former Prime Ministers, P.V. Narasimha Rao and V.P. Singh; former West Bengal Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu, the former Union Minister, Murli Manohar Joshi and senior VHP and RSS leaders. The request for summoning the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was not accepted by the Commission.
