CET only for State students, Kannadigas in border areas

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, MARCH 24. The Government has ruled out allowing non-Karnataka students to take the Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to professional courses.

The Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, told the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday that the Government is firm that non-Karnataka students should be barred from the CET.

The same was the case with Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Kannadigas living in other States, particularly in border areas, will be allowed to take the CET.

He said the State Government will finalise the admission schedule after the Supreme Court gives its ruling on admissions to professional colleges.

Meanwhile, the State Government will hold talks with the managements of private professional colleges. The latter have agreed to talks after the Supreme Court order.

Mr. Manjunath said the State Government has impressed upon the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Arjun Singh, to enact a central law on admissions to professional colleges. The issue came up at the recent conference of Education Ministers. The Centre is expected to enact the law during the budget session of Parliament.

R. Ramalinga Reddy, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, in reply to a question of Nagaraj Shetty (BJP), said the Government is thinking of making English as a language of study from class one in Kannada-medium schools. This will prevent the demand among parents and students for English-medium schools. Many members agreed with the views of the Minister and said English should be introduced in Kannada-medium schools straightway.
