Training for unemployed

Mysore March 24. The Karnataka Self-Help Groups' Federation will conduct a training programme in mobile phone repair and servicing, submersible pump repair, motor rewinding, house wiring, industrial wiring, fabric painting, beautician course, screen printing and DTP, videography and photography, tailoring, paper bag making, and flower making, among others.

Birth anniversary

Mysore March 24. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) will celebrate the 520th birth anniversary of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu on Friday.

The celebrations will be held at the ISKCON centre on 18th Cross, Jayanagar, at 5.15 p.m. A special feature of this year's celebrations is a play depicting an incident in the life of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who was born at Navadwipa in West Bengal. Camps

Mysore March 24. Vivekananda Trust, Mysore, will organise a series of personality development camps during this summer for students studying between classes V and X, according to a press release.

The objective of the camps is to help students learn some of the skills to face the realities of life with a belief system rooted in Indian culture and the message of Swami Vivekananda. The camp will focus on concentration, memory improvement, communication, public speaking, leadership, etc. For details, call 9880813600.

Dharna

Madikeri March 24. The Coorg Bus Owners' Association will stage a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on March 28, to press for their demands, including tax concessions to buses plying during monsoon.

A statement from the Association said here on Thursday that the demands submitted to the Deputy Commissioner on July 7, 2003, June 6, 2004 and on June 22 and March 14 last had not been looked into. The Deputy Commissioner is also the chairman of the Kodagu Regional Transport Authority (RTA).

Prize

BELLARY March 24. Leela Kanchi, a final year degree student of A.S.M. College for Women has won the first prize in an elocution competition held here on Thursday. The competition was organised by the District Information Department in association with the Social Welfare Department and Karnataka State Temperance Board, Bangalore, at Kotturswamy College on "Untouchability and ill effects of alcohol." Navin of the Kotturswamy Collge and D.S. Rajakumar of First Grade College won the second and third place, respectively.

Man killed

Raichur March 24. Laxminarayana and Santoshkumar, pillion rider, were injured seriously when the motorcycle which they riding hit the trailer of a tractor on State Highway 23 near Shakthinagar on Monday. They were admitted to the civil hospital but Santoshkumar died on Tuesday.

The Raichur Rural Police have registered a case.

Accident

BIJAPUR MARCH 24. Two persons died on the spot and two others were injured when a lemon-laden mini-lorry in which they were travelling, fell into a ditch at Hanchanal Cross on Indi Road in Bijapur Rural Police Station limits on Wednesday.

The police identified the dead as Ambanna Pingale (30) and Kallappa Yalagi (30), residents of Lingadalli village in Indi taluk. The injured have been admitted to the civil hospital here.

Ganja seized

Bidar March 24. The Aurad police seized 2.75 quintals of ganja valued at Rs. 2.75 lakhs during raids on three places in the taluk on Monday and Tuesday. Four persons have been arrested in this regard. Acting on a tip off, police took into custody Gyanoba of Ekamba who was transporting 10 kg of ganja.

Over 30 kg of the narcotic was recovered from their house. Gyanoba, his sister and her husband were reportedly receiving the narcotic from Andhra Pradesh and were selling it to people in Mumbai and Pune. The police also seized 235 kg of ganja from the house of Subhash Rathod in Chintamai tanda. Cases have been registered at the Aurad, Santhpur and Chintaki police stations.

Bandh

KOPPAL MARCH 24. A day-long bandh was observed in Gangavathi town on Thursday in response to a call given by the TLBC Farmers' Hitarakshana Samithi to protest against the Government's decision to suspend water supply in the Tungabahdra Left Bank Canal before the end of March. The bandh was total and peaceful. Activists led by Thippe Rudraswamy took out a procession in the city and submitted a memorandum to the tahsildar demanding that the Government ensure for water supply till March end to save the standing crops in the command area.

Suicide

Raichur March 24. Mahaboobsab (30), reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his house in Jalahalli village of Deodurga taluk on Tuesday.

The Jalahalli Police have registered a case.

Two arrested

Raichur March 24. The Raichur police arrested Rangappa and Venkatesh and recovered around 35 litres of toddy from them while they allegedly selling it in Deosugur village on Wednesday. They have been remanded in judicial custody. The Shakthinagar Police have registered a case.

Coaching classes

Belgaum MARCH 24. DISHA, an institute floated by the district administration, will conduct coaching classes for the preliminary as well as main examinations of the Union Public Service Commission and Karnataka Public Service Commission at its centre at Kumar Gandharva Ranga Mandir from March 27. Interested candidates can register their names with the DISHA office on or before March 26, according to a press release.

Weavers withdraw threat

Belgaum March 24. Powerloom weavers withdrew their threat of "self-immolation" in front of the Deputy Commissioner's Office here on Thursday. The decision was taken following an assurance to them by the Minister for Textiles, Satish Jarkiholi, on Wednesday, the weavers said.

The weavers said the Minister has assured to take steps to solve their problems, besides implementing the special package announced for the powerloom sector. He assured them to fix an appointment with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, so that they could present their case before the Chief Minister.

Arya Bhata Award

SIRSI MARCH 24. Ganapati M. Hegde of Targod, near Sirsi, has been selected for the `Arya Bhata' award for 2004. According to a press release, the award will be presented to him in Bangalore on April 2.

Body found

SHIMOGA March 24. The body of a middle aged woman was found in a toilet on the premises of the court complex here on Thursday. She is suspected to have committed suicide. It is stated that the woman who went inside a toilet in the morning did not come out. A worker in the toilet, who grew suspicious over it brought it to the notice of the court administration.

The woman was reportedly found dead in the toilet when it was broken open with the court's permission. She is suspected to have committed suicide by injecting herself a poisonous substance with the help of a syringe, which was reportedly found in her vanity bag. Her identity has not yet been established. The Jaynagar Police have registered the case.

Bangalore March 24. The Government has nominated 20 journalists and others as members of the Karnataka Media Academy. The new Chairman of the academy, V.N. Subba Rao, assumed office today. The members are K.R. Manjunath (Udaya TV, Hassan); Venkatesh (Sogadu), Pavagada; B. Venkat Singh (Suddhimoola), Raichur; and Subbaraya Bhat (Udhyama Darshini), Sirsi (representatives of Karnataka Union of Working Journalists). A. Venkatalakshmaiah (Hantha), G. COMED-K test on May 1

BANGALORE March 24. Even as the Supreme Court verdict on professional college admissions is awaited, the Consortium of Medical, Dental and Engineering Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K) has decided to conduct its undergraduate entrance test on May 1. The Common Entrance Test (CET) for Karnataka students is scheduled to begin on May 3. COMED-K has reportedly identified 12 examination centres across the State. However, it will not be an all-India test as announced earlier. But the test will be open to even non-Karnataka students. The State Government has decided not to allow non-Karnataka students to take the CET conducted by the CET Cell. COMED-K is expected to formally notify the test details on March 28. The notification will also feature the number of colleges and the seats that will accept the COMED-K scores. Last year, as many as 20,000 students had taken the consortium's entrance test. In 2004, 16 medical colleges, 22 dental colleges and 34 engineering colleges had accepted the COMED-K scores to admit students. This time, the CET being restricted to only State students has made many engineering colleges join the consortium. COMED-K officials said engineering college managements have lost faith in the State CET as several seats had remained vacant. The Government was unable to fill up all the engineering seats available only with Karnataka students.

No AICTE recognition

Bangalore March 24. The Director of Technical Education has stated that the following institutions, which have invited applications for admissions to degree and diploma courses, are not recognised by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the State Government and are not affiliated to the Visveshwaraiah Technological University (VTU), Belgaum. They are: Karnataka Regional Institute of Engineering, behind Mysore City Corporation, Mysore; Bangalore Institute of Aeronautical Engineering and Information Technology, 5, S.R.S. Complex, NGEF Layout, 80-ft Road, Nagarabhavi, Bangalore 72; National Institute of Dental Technology, 23, 3rd Floor, Vasavi Plaza, 11th Main, Jayanagar, Bangalore 11; and St. Paul's College of Management Science, 28, 12th Main, 1st Block, Rajajinagar, Bangalore. The director has said that certificates issued by these institutions are not valid. Students seeking admission to the institutions will be doing it at their own risk.

Two students feared drowned

MANGALORE MARCH 24. Two students from H.M.S. ITI, Tumkur, part of a group that had come on an excursion to Dakshina Kannada, are feared to have drowned at Panambur beach on Wednesday. Police said that the two students, Krishnamurthy and Rahmatullah, both aged 19, had gone for a swim around 6 p.m. and have not been seen since. Their bodies have not been recovered. The teachers and other students are waiting at Panambur hoping that the bodies will be recovered soon.

Anantharamaiah takes charge

TUMKUR MARCH 24. Obalaiah Anantharamaiah took charge as the first Vice-Chancellor of Tumkur University here today. Prof. Anantharamaiah was received by I.S. Shivakumar, Director of the university's postgraduate centre here, who is also the Registrar (Evaluation) of the university, and other staff members at the entrance of Dr. Ambedkar Bhavan on Mahatma Gandhi Road. On the controversy over the 300-acre buffer forest area given to the university at Gollahalli, Prof. Anantharamaiah said he will support all attempts aimed at the preservation of nature and abide by the Supreme Court's directive in the matter. Prof. Anantharamaiah's tenure will continue till March 23, 2009. The president and members of Tumkur Vishwavidyalaya Kavalu Samiti issued a press release welcoming the appointment of Prof. Anantharamaiah and promising their cooperation to him in "building the university into a model one in the country."

Appointment hailed

Madikeri March 24. The nomination of Ulliada Dotty Poovaiah, a well-known Kodava novelist and poet, as president of the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy has been widely welcomed in Kodagu district. Ms. Poovaiah is the wife of the former president of the academy, Ulliada M. Poovaiah. She is credited with authoring more than 10 Kodava novels, many collections of poems, dramas and plays. Many of her plays have been staged in Kodagu and elsewhere in the State. Ms. Poovaiah has authored novels such as "Oypath Mallige," "Jellu," "Tenatakara," "Tampu Tamane," "Aa Mundu Mane," "Kodira Koravu," and "Nadul Nal," which is a 700-page novel. Her collection of poems includes "Tenduli." Ms. Poovaiah has written dramas such as "Marpu," which has four plays, "Bayat Kala," "Andu Nadandad," "Gurira Batte," "Jai Hind," "Muchna Mundumane," and others. Ms. Poovaiah was a member in the previous body of the academy. She is currently a sub-editor with Brahmagiri, the first Kodava weekly, edited by her husband.
