TB needs to be treated early, says Minister

BANGALORE, MARCH 24. Awareness about early treatment of tuberculosis should be created at the district level in the State, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, N. Cheluvarayaswamy said here today.

Inaugurating a function to commemorate World TB Day organised by the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare along with the Karnataka State TB Association, the State Department of Medical Education, National TB Institute, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and some voluntary organisations, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said there is a need to tell people to come for treatment early. Mostly people come to the doctor at the last stage when recovery is difficult. Early detection, prevention and treatment is what is required, he said.

As part of the programme, around 400 people including school students, students of nursing colleges and representatives of voluntary organisations participated in a rally to mark World TB Day. The rally was flagged off by the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi. Participants walked from the Raj Bhavan to the Bal Bhavan in Cubbon Park carrying placards with messages about the disease and cure through the directly observed treatment (DoT) programme.

D.R. Heregowda, State TB Officer and Joint Director of Health and Family Welfare Services, said there are 113 TB units all over the State providing treatment and there are around 40,000 DoT providers.
