Hybrid cotton seeds distributed

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MARCH 24. The Southern India Mills' Association - Cotton Development and Research Association (SIMA-CDRA) has identified 36 `intra-specific' hybrids of cotton seeds and distributed it to farmers in six centres in the State for a trial programme.

The Chief Adviser of the CDRA, T. V. Karivaradaraaju, said the objective was to select varieties suitable for cultivation mainly in the delta regions in the State. The duration of the identified hybrids was 125-135 days and owing to the shorter crop period they required less water.

The seeds were recently distributed to farmers in Kumbakonam, Konganapuram, Theni, Villupuram, Udumalpet and Pollachi for cultivation on trial plots, he said.

The SIMA-CDRA was also developing HB 3, another hybrid, that possessed superior fibre properties. This was under the seed production stage now and was likely to be released to the CDRA farmers in January next.

The association would conduct a meet on cotton cultivation in April and release two books at the programme, he added. One was a compilation of research, extension and development in cotton to meet new global challenges and was based on a national-level survey conducted last year. The other book was a study on the association's seed development activities.
