CITU meet

NALGONDA: The district unit of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) will meet here on March 27 at Doddi Komaraiah Bhavan to take stock of workers' situation and to chalk out future course of action.

The CITU general secretary, T.Veera Reddy, in a press release here on Thursday said a couple of State-level leaders would participate in the meeting.

RTC workers'workshop

NALGONDA: The regional workshop of the APSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation would be held on March 29, according to the region's assistant secretaries, M. Rambabu and M. Chandramouli. The Federation's State vice-presidents, P.N.Murthy and Y.R.K.Reddy, will address the workshop.

Two killed in road mishap

CHITTOOR: Two students died in a road accident at Mogili on the Chittoor - Palmaner national highway, 25 km from here, on Wednesday. A boy, studying in the second year Intermediate at Tirupati, and Siva Prasad studying in first year B. Tech, were going to Palamaner on a two-wheeler when the accident occurred.

Ex-naxal shot dead by Maoists

MAHABUBNAGAR: A former naxalite, Kummari Shivudu alias Ashok(25), was shot dead by the CPI (Maoist) activists at Molachinthalapally in deep forest of Kollapur mandal last night.

According to information reaching the district headquarters, three armed Maoists around 9 p.m. picked up Shivudu while he was talking to some villagers in front of one Nagi Shetty house. He was dragged to village courtyard where Maoists, after branding Shivudu a police informer, pumped two bullets into him. Later, they hit him with boulder on the face, resulting in death on the spot. Before fleeing the scene the Maoists told the villagers that there were three more persons acting as police informers and that they would also meet the same fate as Shivudu if they did not mend their ways.

Selected teachers plan rally

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Selected Teachers' Association (DSC 2003) has decided to organise a `Chalo Assembly' rally on March 29 demanding posting orders to 17,000 members of the organisation.

C. Bhupati Rao, president, B. Venkat, general secretary, in a statement issued here on Thursday said the rally would begin at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram, Bagh Lingampally.

New posting for 3 IPS officers

HYDERABAD: The Government on Thursday transferred three IPS officers and gave new postings to them. The Hyderabad South Zone DCP, Mahesh Muralidhar Bhagawat, was transferred and posted as the Nalgonda SP replacing Harish Kumar Guptha who is going through a training programme in America.

Sandeep Shandilya was transferred from Intelligence wing and posted as the new DCP, South Zone. The Grey Hounds Group Commander, Anil Kumar, was transferred and posted as the Hyderabad DCP-1 (Traffic).

Demand to install Pingali's statue

NEW DELHI: The Telugu Desam Party on Thursday suggested that the Government install a statue of Pingali Venkaiah, who designed the national tricolour and also issue a postal stamp in his honour.

Raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha, the TDP MP, K. Rama Mohana Rao, said Pingali Venkaiah had died in poverty in a small hut near Vijayawada and his only dream was to see the national flag flutter atop the Red Fort. "But the most pitiable thing is neither he nor his family members could afford to take him to Delhi to see the National Flag flying on the red Fort,'' Mr. Rao said.

Dies in bee attack

KHAMMAM: A 60-year-old person, stung by bees, died at Buggapadu village near Sathupalli on Thursday. Another person of the same age attacked by a swarm of bees was hospitalised. He is said to be out of danger.

Two drowned in river

NELLORE: Two Intermediate students were drowned in the Pennar river of Nellore town on Thursday.

According to the police, two of the three students, went for swimming, were drowned. The dead were identified as Sunil Raju and Sudheer.

Police come under criticism

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (ML-New Democracy) has demanded withdrawal of cases registered against Maoist emissaries -- Varavara Rao, Gadar and Kalyan Rao -- by the Chilakaluripet and Balanagar police.

In a statement here on Thursday, R. Subhash Chandra Bose, secretary of the party, criticised the police for registering cases in connection with the attack on the Chilakaluripet police station and killing of a constable in Mahabubmagar district. This reflected the Government's `vengeful' attitude, he said adding that conspiracy case showed `dictatorial' tendencies.

Archaeological bond with Lanka

HYDERABAD: Sri Lanka and Andhra Pradesh sealed their archaeological bonds when the Sri Lanka Deputy High Commissioner, Sumith Nakandala, presented 16 books of great significance to the State here on Thursday. The visitor called on the Minister for School Education, N. Rajyalakshmi, and officials.

In reciprocation of Mr. Sumith Nakandala's gesture, Nagi Reddy, Secretary, youth advancement, tourism and culture, presented a set of publications of the Department of Archaeology and Museums. He termed the meeting as the beginning of cultural exchanges.

Later, the Minister presented a miniature painting to Mr. Sumith Nakandala.

Girl dies in suicide pact

CUDDAPAH: A girl died while her mother and brother were battling for life in a suicide pact by a family in Pulivendula town on Thursday. A widow, Dastagiramma (45), consumed poisonous granules along with her son, Kullayappa (10), and daughter, Raja Kullayamma (6), at her residence at Bayammathota, according to the police. The woman and children were rushed to Pulivendula Government hospital where Raja Kullayamma, died.

Five killed as lorries collide

ONGOLE: Five persons died and seven others sustained injuries when two lorries collided at Kamepalli in Santamagulur mandal in Prakasam district on Thursday.

While one person died on the spot, four others, including a farmer, succumbed to their injuries in hospital at Narsaraopet. The accident occurred when a tomato-laden lorry was going from Kurnool to Narsaraopet hit against an empty lorry going from Narasaraopet to Vinukonda. The tomato farmer, Venkataramana (50) of Raichoti, was among the dead. The others died in the mishap were Bathula Ankarao (20), Bathula Subbarao (22) and Komaragiri Anjaiah (40) and the cleaner of the lorry, Chinta Ravi (40).

Suicide bid by murder accused

CUDDAPAH: A man, charged with killing his wife and daughter, attempted suicide by consuming pesticide while going to surrender before the Badvel police on Thursday afternoon.

Urimindi Ramasubba Reddy of Gudem village in Badvel mandal, was charged with murdering his wife, Ramalakshmamma and daughter, Sunitha, around midnight on July 8 last year after an altercation on a complaint lodged with the police by his father-in-law, Devireddy Gopal Reddy.

Minister coming

NELLORE: The Minister for Major Irrigation, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, will arrive in Nellore on Sunday for a day's visit to the district.

His schedule include a visit to the SSLC reservoir and inauguration of Telugu Ganga Project Rehabilitation Centre at Pokuurupalli.

At Sankrantipalli, the Minister will review Indira Prabha and Aasra schemes, besides distributing gas connections to women.

In the afternoon he will visit Kandaleru and Somasila reservoirs and have a discussion with the officials before leaving for Hyderabad, the same day.

ST panel member's visit

NELLORE: The Member, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, New Delhi, Buduru Srinivasulu, will participate in the inaugural function of mega medical camp for tribals at Seetaramapuram of Nellore district, on March 27, arranged by the Swarna Bharati Trust.

The next day, he will hold a meeting in the office of Integrated Tribal Development Agency, Nellore, with the District Tribal Welfare Officers of Nellore, Prakasam, Chittoor and Cuddapah regarding tribal development activities, implementation of various developmental schemes for STs, with particular emphasis on public distribution system for tribal people.

Urdu cassette for students

CUDDAPAH: The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, has directed the DPEP officials to ensure distribution of an Urdu audio songs cassette, `School ki duniyan mein', brought out by Sangeet Sagar Academy, to all Urdu schools in the district.

Stating this, the academy general secretary and poet, Sattar Faizi, and music director, Syed Nayeem, said in a statement that the audio cassette for Urdu students was the first of its kind.

Ten injured as bus overturns

KURNOOL: Ten students sustained minor injuries when a school bus carrying them overturned near Orvakal in Kurnool district on Thursday.

The students were coming to the SSC examination centre at Orvakal. After first aid, the students appeared for the examination. The authorities allowed them to appear for the examination an hour late.
