BELLARY, MARCH 24. Around 48 huts, cattle, 160 sheep, and food grains were reduced to ashes in a fire accident at Hirekeryaginahalli in Sandur taluk on Wednesday night. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. According to villagers, the fire was first noticed at a harvesting spot owned by Bharamappa. The villagers aid that the butt of a beedi or cigarette may have caused the fire. Food grains in around 16 kanas were destroyed in the fire. In addition, around 160 sheep, a buffalo and a calf were charred to death in the fire. Fire tenders were pressed into service and worked hard to bring the fire under control. The loss has been estimated at around Rs. 17 lakhs. The victims were given an ex-gratia compensation of Rs. 6,000 and 50 kgs of rice. Those whose huts were destroyed in the fire were provided shelter at the school and food was arranged for them. The tahsildar S.K. Salaluddin, said that Ashraya houses will be allotted to those who lost their houses in the fire.
