NEW DELHI, MARCH 24 . A two-day Theyyam festival showcasing one of the ancient dance forms of the country opened in the Capital today. Hosted by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, the festival will have a seminar, an exhibition and two evening performances. Classified as a folk art, Theyyam is a theatre form with accompaniments of vocal music, percussion instruments and dance movements. It is performed by eight traditional tribal communities of Kerala - Malayan, Vannan, Velan, Pulayan, Mavilan, Kopalan, Paravan and Pampathan. The Nairs are the traditional patrons of this dance form, which has spiritual elements in its rituals. The songs of Theyyam are not written but have survived as oral tradition.
