Nalgonda
By Our Staff Reporter
NALGONDA, MARCH 24. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Nalgonda unit, has asked the Government to sanction scholarships for all Backward Classes students forthwith. In a press release issued here on Thursday, the district saha-pramukh, B. Nagesh, and the State executive member, K. Linga Swamy, said many students were denied scholarships. Of the 24,625 applicants, scholarship was granted for only 5,774 students, according to them. ``This is an act of betrayal by the Congress Government. It has bitterly failed to keep the promises given to student community at the time of elections,'' they said. The Telugu Desam Government had also ditched the BC students by granting scholarships to only 8,735 students out of the 21,095 applicants, they recalled. ``While an amount of Rs.5 crores is required to sanction scholarships for all BC students, the Government has earmarked only Rs.3.68 crores of which, Rs. 2.5 cores was granted for renewals,'' Nagesh and Lingaswamy said. The Government had adjusted the remaining Rs.1.18 cores for students in the current academic year, they maintained. They wanted the Government to release sufficient funds to enable officials to sanction scholarships. They also asked the Government to bear the fees of BC students studying in Government as well as private colleges. "If the Government continues to treat BC students like this, we will be forced to launch a State-wide agitation,'' the ABVP leaders warned.
