`All-India Radio made me what I am'

CHENNAI, MARCH 24. "I am proud to say that I gained so much experience and learning thanks to my 65-year-old association with the All India Radio (AIR)," M. Balamuralikrishna, the noted Carnatic musician, said on Wednesday.

Giving away awards to winners of vocal and instrumental music competitions conducted by the AIR, he said that working for the AIR helped him improve his creativity, composing, knowledge of playing different musical instruments and operas.

"My popularity and recognition all over the world is due to AIR," he said pointing out that the institution imbibed the qualities of discipline, time and mike sense and punctuality in him.

G. Jayalal, Deputy Director General, Southern Zone, Prasar Bharati spoke on the archival collection of music records available with the AIR.

K. Srinivasaraghavan, Director, AIR, Chennai, welcomed the gathering.

Prizes were given to R. Sridev, Subhiksha Rangarajan, N. Malavi, M. Padmalatha, Tushara C. Mohanan, Srikanth K. Pullikan, H. Prasanna, S.M. Rajarathnam, P.G. Kalidas and the orchestra group of S. Vanathi from Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Tiruchi.

Prize winners gave a brief recital at the end of the programme.
