Fire breaks out in leather export unit

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MARCH 24. A fire broke out in a leather export unit in SIDCO Nagar, Guindy, on Thursday morning.

The Fire and Rescue Service said they received a call from the private export company around 11 a.m. Chemical adhesives stocked on the first floor of the unit caught fire due to mishandling by one of the employees.

The fire spread to the cut pieces of leather that were stacked nearby, the Fire and Rescue Service personnel said.

Five fire tenders and two Metrowater tankers were pressed into service.

They brought the blaze under control after an hour. V. Vijayakumar, Divisional Fire Officer, South, supervised the fire-fighting operations.

The Fire and Rescue Service had advised the export unit staff to undergo a fire prevention and fire-fighting training programme.
