HYDERABAD, MARCH 24. Given its history and architecture, Hyderabad qualifies for recognition as a World Heritage City and a sustained effort and campaign would ensure recognition for the 400-year-old city.

At a meeting organised recently to discuss the conservation and management of historic buildings and precincts in the city, Vasanata Sobha Turaga, conservation architect, called for efforts to achieve the status for the city.

Towards this goal, she suggested similar meetings to pool in ideas and energies and representing the case to UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Paris.

Ms. Vasanta lamented the sorry state of structures categorised as heritage and said the city was losing them one by one despite regulations, committees and NGOs. She cited Malwala Palace, Vasant Vihar and Neo-Mysore Cafe as some examples of heritage structures being demolished.

Apart from adding more structures to the heritage list, which presently has 137 buildings, there was a need to have a separate authority to take care of these structures.

"If one comes across instances of heritage structures at danger, they don't know which authority to approach," she said.

More meetings of professionals, specialists and interest groups would be held in coming days to draft a strategy for making Hyderabad's case for Heritage City status. Interested individuals and voluntary groups can contact Ms. Vasanta on phone number, 92462-95124.
