Weather

Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 36.7 degree Celsius and a minimum of 24.5 degree Celsius on Thursday. Humidity which was 77 per cent in the morning dropped to 60 per cent in the evening.

Commodity prices

The following are the prices (in rupees per kg) of the essential commodities in the local wholesale markets on Thursday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil - 48.50, palmolein oil - 39, sunflower oil - 47.50, tamarind (flower variety) - 21 to 26, tamarind (karipuli variety) - 39 to 46, chillies (AC) - 18 to 20, chillies (new) - 18 to 23, rice (2716) - 12, rice (superfine) - 14, rice (samba masoori) - 15 to 16, rice (sona masoori) - 16 to 17, black gram - 21.80 to 24.20, red gram - 21 to 25.25.

Reading room

inaugurated

The Communist Party of India(Marxist) floor leader, Ch. Babu Rao, has inaugurated a reading room constructed at a cost of Rs. 3 lakhs at Kandrika on Thursday.

Mr. Babu Rao also took part in the inauguration of five additional classrooms constructed at a cost of Rs. 8.5 lakhs at the S.V. Reddy Municipal High School in the 50th division represented by the party's corporator, Meda Ramulu.

Free eye

check-up

As part of the ongoing celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the historic Dandi March, the Vijayawada city Congress committee, in association with the Lions Club of Vijayawada Megacity organised a free eye check-up camp at Shantinagar in Payakapuram on Thursday.

Over 350 people who attended the camp got their eyes tested and 50 of them had been referred to undergo cataract surgery to be held on March 28.

awards invited

Telugu Vaibhavam, a voluntary Telugu cultural trust, which gives away the annual Global Telugu Glory awards has invited applications from Telugu people excelling in different fields for presentation of the 11th Global Telugu Glory Awards - 2004-05.

The awards will be presented at a glittering function to be held in the city on April 9, coinciding with Ugadi, the Telugu New Year day and Telugu people from India and abroad working in Government departments, industry, education, journalism and other fields can send their applications for selection to the award.
