Maundy Thursday observed

KOCHI, MARCH 24. Maundy Thursday, commemorating the day when Jesus established the Eucharist and partook of the last supper with his disciples, was observed by Christians all over Ernakulam district.

The main ceremony of the day involved washing the feet of 12 persons chosen to represent the 12 apostles of Christ.

At the St. Mary's Basilica, Ernakulam, Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil, Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly, led the ceremonies and washed the feet of the 12 chosen disciples. The ceremonies were led by Daniel Acharuparambil, Archbishop of the Varappuzha Archdiocese at the St. Francis Assisi Cathedral, Ernakulam.

The Vicar, T.I. James, led the Holy Communion mass at the Immanuel CSI Church, Broadway. The Vicar, Thomas Varghese, led the mass at the Sharon Marthoma Church, Palarivattom. At the Vallarpadam Basilica, family units led the holy mass and service. Maundy Thursday was also observed at the St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral, St. Antony's Church, Kaloor and Infant Jesus Church, Ernakulam.

The Maundy Thursday observances will culminate in the commemoration of the suffering and death of Christ on Mount Calvary on Good Friday.
