Steps to streamline traffic mooted

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, MARCH 24. The Ernakulam District Residents Associations Apex Council (EDRAAC) presented a list of suggestions aimed at streamlining traffic in the city. The list was presented at a seminar on traffic on Wednesday.

The list includes 15 long-term projects, decisions that need to be implemented immediately and relocation of parking areas.

The long-term projects include completion of Seaport-Airport Road, Vallarpadom-Vaduthala-Cheranalloor road up to NH-17, Vypeen-Munambam Road, a 5-metre-wide road up to Kathrikadavu from Vytilla-Ponnurunni, HMT-Nedumbassery Road, connecting the coastal road from Thanthonithuruthu to NH-47 at Anchumana, bus terminal at Vytilla, overbridges at Ponnurunni, Pullepady, Edappally, Vaduthala and Atlantis Junction, widening of the stretch between Madhava Pharmacy and North Overbridge, St. Benedict Road up to Paramara road and the stretch between Thoppumpady and Aroor, constructing parallel tracks for light vehicles at South Overbridge and Kundanoor-Thevara bridge and four-laning of the National Highway from Angamali to Thrissur.

Traffic diversion

Bus services should be diverted through Edappally-Kundannur-Thevara route along the bypass and services should be introduced to Aroor-Cherthala and Edappally-Aluva from Tripunithura, the EDRAAC suggested.

New bus services should be operated on Kaloor-Kadavanthra and Kaloor-Thevara routes along K.P. Vallon Road. Speed limits should be strictly implemented for heavy vehicles.

The council also suggested construction of a new parallel road to M.G. Road from south to north, to ease congestion on M.G. Road.

Other suggestions forwarded by the EDRAAC include synchronisation of traffic lights, strict implementation of lane traffic, facilitating pedestrian crossing by frequent improvement of zebra-markings, ensuring parking space for multi-storied buildings as instructed by the law, time-limits for parking on main roads such as M.G. Road and rehabilitation of vendors along the footpaths.
