Action sought against unauthorised windmills

By Our Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE, MARCH 24. Farmers have alleged that windmills are being erected unauthorised in the district. At the agriculturists' grievances meeting held here recently, they complained that a number of windmills set up, especially in the Parambikulam-Aliyar Canal areas, had damaged the bunds of the canals. But the Public Works Department had failed to prevent it.

A windmill unit had constructed a building in the Negamam area right under the high-tension route. As the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) owned the high-tension area, the building was unauthorised, they contended.

They alleged that a construction worker got electrocuted while working on that building. The TNEB had failed to act even after that, they added.

They expressed the apprehension that windmills erected after laying pipes for a considerable depth would affect the ground water levels.

The TNEB officials responded that notice had been issued to the concern that had constructed a building on the high-tension route.

Besides, police had registered a case in connection with the electrocution of the worker.

The Collector, S. Kosalaraman, who presided, said that there was no need to issue notice to the buildings constructed unauthorised. The TNEB itself could demolish them, he added.

Another important grievance of the ryots related to the frequent disruptions in power supply.

According to them, while the TNEB is good enough to inform power shutdowns to the domestic users well in advance, such announcements were not forthcoming with regard to supply to agriculture.

The officials responded that it was difficult for them to make any concrete announcements because of the "overload."
