`Self-criticism vital for writers'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 24. The best form of literary criticism is criticism by the self, but caution should be taken to ensure that it does not become self-adoration or self-condemnation, said poet and academic O.N.V. Kurup.

Inaugurating `Vimarshanam-2005,' the State Literary Camp, organised here today by the Purogama Kala Sahithya Sangham, he suggested that all genuine writers should be prepared for introspection and self-criticism. Writers should be fearless.

Convictions

They should have convictions and concerns. Criticism, like genuine works of literature, should also be genuine, he added.

Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan, State president of the Sangham, who presided over the function, termed criticism as a faithful scrutiny of culture and literature.

It would not be proper to idealise literature, he said. Pirappancode Murali, MLA, welcomed the participants and V.N. Murali proposed the vote of thanks.

The Sangham condemned the Pattoor church authorities' denial of permission to its members to pay floral tributes at the tomb of M.P. Paul, the revolutionary writer who defied social conventions and waged a relentless war against conservative practices.
