Somayagam to be performed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 24. A somayagam will be performed on the premises of the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple here from April 23 to 29 under the aegis of the temple trust and the Somayaga Nirvahaka Samithi. The chairman of the Samithi, M. Sambasivan, told a press conference here that the yagam is being performed for the well-being of society at large. The ritual is being performed in the State capital after a span of two decades, he added. Somayaji Raghunath Narayan Khale will lead the yagam.

PSC employees'

allegation

The Kerala PSC Employees Union has alleged that the Government move to bypass the Public Service Commission (PSC) and entrust police recruitment to a new board will open up a new arena for corruption. In a press note here, the union said that the K.T. Thomas Commission's recommendation for a new board was designed to suit the United Democratic Front agenda. The delay in recruitment to the police force was owing to the failure to report vacancies in time, it said. The union feared that the proposed board would also bypass reservation rules.

Power fails for the second day

Peroorkada and some adjoining areas suffered a power outage for many hours for the second consecutive day today following the failure of a 250 KVA transformer there.

On Wednesday, mechanical faults in a 500 KVA transformer near the Peroorkada junction had disrupted power supply to many nearby areas for more than six hours. Though KSEB officials repeatedly tried to charge the transformer, they failed. Normal power supply to these areas was restored only after 9 p.m. that day. The faulty transformer is yet to be replaced.

KSEB sources said the second transformer had developed a snag today evening due to overloading. Efforts were on to rectify the problem late into the night.
