Disease surveillance project launched

By Our Staff Correspondent

SHIMLA, MARCH 25. A World Bank-aided Rs 9.23-crore Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP) was launched here today to strengthen health services in the State. On the occasion, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said the project is going to be an important step towards synergising public health services and checking communicable diseases.

The Chief Minister said that the project would help keep a vigil on epidemics besides gathering information about trends on non-communicable diseases. He said that early warning signals of impending outbreaks, help to initiate effective response control programmes and help in allocation of resources in an efficient manner would be possible with the implementation of the project.

By associating NGOs and private sector in providing valuable information on epidemic-prone diseases the scope and coverage of the surveillance system would be widened, he said. He urged the representatives of various professional organisations and private institutions to cooperate by providing timely information on epidemic-prone diseases.

Harinder Hira, Health Secretary of the Himachal Government, said that the five-year Integrated Surveillance Diseases Project would strengthen the health network in the State. She said that the best use of information technology would be made to disseminate the information at all levels.

Dr. D. Bachani, National Project Officer (IDSP) of the Government of India, said that Himachal Pradesh had taken the lead in launching the project in the country despite its difficult geo-physical conditions. He said that collaboration and coordination at different levels would help the State in achieving the desired results.
